durch chemische Veränderung mit einem Reduktionsschritt, in dem durch einen bestimmten Stoff (Reduktionsmittel) die Oxidationsstufe des Schadstoffes erniedrigt wird.
Bei der den Schadstoff zersetzenden Reduktionsreaktion erfolgt ein Übergang eines oder mehrerer Elektronen von dem Reduktionsmittel zu dem Schadstoff, d.h. das Reduktionsmittel wird oxidiert (gibt Elektronen ab) und der Schadstoff wird reduziert (nimmt Elektronen auf).
