[EN] 12,581. Zehden, A. June 2. Gearing, driving.- Relates to arrangements for driving vehicles on railways, working lifts, and reciprocating parts of machine tools and other appliances, by means of a travelling electromagnetic field. As applied to railways, a magnet e wound for three-phase or other currents, is carried by the vehicle in proximity to a rail which acts the part of a short-circuited armature in a polyphase motor. The rail f may be made of iron only, or of iron and brass or other metal, and i it may be perforated with holes to economize weight and to regulate the currents therein ; the holes may be of different breadth to facilitate the starting of the vehicle &c. Also, the rail may be reinforced on curves to counteract centrifugal force. The magnets may be carried directly over or under the rail with a view of increasing the adhesion, or of partly supporting the weight of the vehicle, or they may be disposed on opposite sides of the rail, or the electromagnet may be placed on one side of the rail and a laminated mass of iron placed on the other side. The arrangements may be such that the forces are balanced or unbalanced. |
