57 Zusammenfassung AB [EN] 169,167. Joel & Co., A., (Assignees of Hofmann, J.). Sept, 13, 1920, [Convention date]. Pneumatic springs, spring shackles. - A shock - absorber for vehicles comprises two levers pivoted together and to the frame and running' gear respectively, and an air cushion and one or more coil springs in tandem included between the two levers. The lever members 9, 11, Fig. 1, are connected to the frame 1 and the spring 2 through a flanged pivoted member 4 and an interiorly threaded member 6 respectively, and are pivoted together by a pin 12 held by a lock-nut and passing through one end of the lever 11 and through lugs on the lever 9. Extensions 17a, 11<b> limit the movement. The lever 9 is formed as a casing, to receive a threaded adjusting-ring 18, and has a semi-spherical extension 20 with a semi-spherical cap 21 screwed thereon. These parts receive a fabric element 23 secured to a plunger 26 and having a hole for the reception of an inflating valve 28 of an india-rubber sack 27. The plunger 26 seats on a head 29 screwed to a rod 30 having an oil chamber 32 containing a spring 33 to hold up a wick 34. The rod 30 is pivotally connected to the lever 11. The plunger 26 is carried by a tube 37 flanged to support a spring 39, the upper end of which abuts against a flange on an outer tube 41, between a flange 42 on which and the ring 18 is supported a second spring 43. Instead of the extension 20, the casing 9 may have a bead 44, Fig. 3, holding a fabric diaphragm 45 and a rubber disc 46 cemented to a rubber sack 47, the edges of which are held by an off-set 48 on the part 21. The inner coil spring may be omitted when the outer tube 41 is formed with a plunger head secured to the member 23, and forming a seat for the head 29. A sack of pure rubber may be used without the fabric member, and may rest on a plunger head 50, Fig. 6, having an apron 51 depending freely over the casing 9b and spaced from an apertured casing 52 to allow the sack to fold. The elasticity of the sack is now added to the resiliency of the cushion and the single coil spring 43. A rubber buffer 56 may be added, and the cap 21c is provided with inflating means comprising a cylinder 58 having vents 59 covered by a rubber ring 60, and closed by a cap 61 seated on a vented rubber washer 62 screwed down by a screw 64. A nipple 65 is provided for the connection of a pump when the screw 64 is removed,. the vents 59 preventing over-inflation. The Specification as open to inspection under- Sect. 91 (3) (a) also describes a form of apparatus. in which the air cushion is omitted, the head supporting a closed plunger tube supporting the inner spring. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
