Production of Me- beta ''-Al2O3 containing less than 2.4 mol.% MeAlO2, where Me is a monovalent metal selected from Li, Na, K, Rb, Ag or Ta, comprises determining the MeAlO2 content of a given Me- beta ''-Al2O3 powder, adding psi -Al2O3 powder for compensation of the MeAlO2, and then firing the powder mixture.
