57 Zusammenfassung AB [EN] Hydrogen and oxygen are produced by the passage of an electrical current through electrodes immersed in an electrolyte and through electrodes located in the gas space above the electrolyte under low press. giving a corona discharge. A direct current is applied to the electrolyte but with a superimposed and variable directional change to prevent polarisation. The electrodes in the gas spaces are fed with a high frequency voltage in excess of 300 V. Useful (1) as a means of storing energy, whereby power stations running at a constant output generate H2 and O2 at night, which stored and used as fuel for peak-shaving during the day; (2) in electrolytic waste water treatment processes. Up to ten times as much H2 and O2 can be generated as in conventional cells using the same power consumption.
