57 Abstract AB [EN] The invention relates to a surveying device and an applicatin of an axial-flow type motor to a positioning device of the surveying device. The surveying device has at least one optoelectronic distance measuring device, a base, a support, a beam steering unit, an angle measuring system and a positioning device to be excited. The positioning devcie comprises several fixedly arranged coils surrounding the tilt axis and/or vertical axis in annular form; axes of the coils are parallel to the tilt axis or vertical axis at axial direction, and the coils can be excited by an exciting device and said coils through driving means so controllable that it with a plurality of, so that the coils are adjacent to a rotor disc circumferentially in alternating polarity and are interacted with multiple rotor magnets which are axially opposite to the coils to ensure the following functions: applying a torque to the beam steering unit or the support; enabling the free manual movement of the beam steering unit or the support; and blocking the movement of the beam steering unit or the support.
