57 Zusammenfassung AB [EN] The invention comprises new salts of formula <FORM:0785732/IV (a)/1> in which X stands for an anionic radical, such as chloride, bromide, iodide and p-toluenesulphonate radicals. They may be prepared by heating a ,a 1-dipyridyl with an ethylene glycol di-ester. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of an inert solvent or diluent, for example nitrobenzene or b -ethoxyethanol. Certain of the new compounds may also be obtained by reacting a salt of formula <FORM:0785732/IV (a)/2> (in which Y is an anionic radical) with a salt derived from an anionic radical X. For example, a compound of the above formula in which Y stands for bromine can be converted into an iodide or chloride by treatment with sodium iodide or silver chloride respectively. The new compounds possess herbicidal properties and may be used as herbicides in the form of aqueous solutions to which may be added wetting agents and/or humectants and agents having adhering properties or in the form of powders when mixed with inert pulverulent diluents. In the examples: (a) 2,21-dipyridyl is heated with ethylene dibromide to give the quaternary bromide monohydrate; (b) the dibromide obtained in (a) is treated with sodium iodide solution to give the quaternary iodide; (c) the product of (a) is treated with silver chloride solution to give the quaternary chloride; and (d) 2,21-dipyridyl is heated with ethylene bis-p-toluenesulphonate to give the quaternary p-toluene sulphonate.ALSO:Quaternary salts of formula <FORM:0785732/VI/1> in which X is an anionic radical such as chloride, bromide, iodide or p-toluene-sulphonate radical have herbicidal properties and may be used in herbicidal compositions. The compositions may be liquid compositions, e.g. aqueous solutions of these salts. These liquid compositions may advantageously contain wetting agents and/or humectants. Suitable wetting agents are, for example, alkali metal salts of dinaphthyl methane disulphonic acids or of long-chain aliphatic sulphates, e.g. sodium lauryl sulphate, and condensation products of ethylene oxide with an alkyl phenol such as octylcresol. The humectant may be, for example, calcium chloride, glycerol, ethylene glycol or a water-soluble polyethylene glycol. These liquid compositions may also contain agents which improve the adhering properties to the plant, e.g. sodium carboxymethylcellulose and ammonium polymethacrylate. The herbicidal compositions may also be in the form of solid compositions in which the new quaternary salts are mixed with inert pulverulent diluents, e.g. talc, china clay, gypsum, basic slag, kieselguhr or bentonite. In the examples herbicidal compositions are made by mixing 2,21-dipyridyl ethylene dibromide, water and a polyethyleneoxy alkylphenol; (b) dissolving 2,21-dipyridyl ethylene dibromide in water; and (c) mixing 2,21-dipyridyl ethylene dibromide with china clay.
